OTMU #3: DEFICIENCY DEFENCE 102
Deficiency Defense 102
When trying to poke holes in veganism people try to look for any & everything to argue about. 1 of their points is the lack of nutrients that “can only be found in animals” which would lead to a deficiency in a plant based diet. That would be true if it was 1835 but all these arguments are invalid in 2021. First let’s get this out the way: 92% OF AMERICANS HAVE A NUTRITION DEFICIENCY. Not 92% vegans, 92% of EVERYONE. Now get the egg off your face & let’s breakdown some actual vitamins that vegans need to focus on.
B12
B12 is responsible for helping make red blood cells & supporting the nervous system. It also helps make DNA & realeses the energy in the food we eat. 40% of the population is deficient. It used to be found naturally in the soil but years of pollution have ruined the earth. The only way animal based diets get it is by farmers injecting it into their animals...
Vegan sources are:
- Fortified cereals & mills
- nutritional yeast
- algae/seaweed
DHA/EPA
Omega 3s are essential for brain functioning. It comes in 3 forms: ALA, DHA & EPA. ALA is easily found in seeds & nuts like chia seed or walnuts but DHA/EPA can get tricky. It’s vegan sources include:
- algae/seaweed
- spirunilla.
I would suggest supplementing it. There’s a bunch to pick from on the internet, I use @sportsresearch VEGAN OMEGA 3.
VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is responsible for regulating calcium in the body to promote healthy bones but 42% of the US is lacking it. Vitamin D comes in 2 forms: D2 & D3. D2 is readily found in plants. D3 can be produced naturally by our skin when exposed to sunlight. Animal derived D3 is extracted from washing sheep’s wool with chemicals repeatedly...
Vegan sources of D3 include:
- Fortified cereals, milk & orange juice
- sunlight
- vegan yogurts
All that noise you hear about people having to switch from plant based back to animals because they weren’t getting enough ___is 100% cap. It’s less about not getting nutrients & more about jumping into something with half a mind. Just like we covered in VEGAN TRANSITION BUILDING BLOCKS eating a range of foods/doing your research on what you need will help you thrive not just survive on plants
