My Story
I'm a 30 year old industrial sports medicine specialist and athletic coach from Florida. I started Vegan Out The Mud as a way to show the homies how easy a plant based lifestyle is to live. Vegan lifestyles don't have to be expensive or extravagant and now I want to share what I've learned with everyone.
I switched over to plant based by chance. I actually had never heard of veganism or met a vegan in real life until I was 22 years old. The beginning of my journey started with one of my Grambling teammates "Mijo" Martinez explaining who the Isrealites in the Bible are today. That motivated me to want to live as closely as I could to them so I decided to eat like them. That day I cut out pork, catfish, eel, alligator, and frog legs. A few years later I met my girlfriend's parents and they told me they were vegetarians. My mind was blown at the thought of black people being vegetarians. When they explained to me there was research proving the negative effects of meat on the body my jaw dropped. I was furious that companies are allowed to outright lie and keep these kinds of studies quiet. From there I went pescatarian for a few months before making a New Year's resolution to go vegetarian in 2017. Three months into being vegetarian and after learning about how evil the dairy industry is I went vegan on March 19th and haven't looked back.
The "Out The Mud" aspect came to me because I made this switch after packing up everything and moving from Florida to California. When I was getting settled I was surviving off food stamps and a couple hundred dollars. Throughout this journey I've always been the only vegan in my immediate area so I went through a lot of trial and error. The lack of resources or knowledge made me get creative and learn the true foundation of nutrition and cooking. Now I have to share what I've learned and continue to learn.
Here at Vegan Out The Mud I want to show everyone how easy and affordable it is to eat better for yourself and do it in style!
